Our drawing class this term focuses on character design and development, taught by Siju Thomas. Thomas is a talented artist who specializes in creating characters -- beginning with traditional skeletal, muscular, and skin sketches and then taking them to 3D modeling. A point which he's sure to drive home is the idea of creating characters which are grounded in reality -- varied concerns such as considering movement based upon physique, determining dental structure and jaw line based upon diet (aka, a carnivore would most likely have incisors), and more. One focus of the course this term will be designing a zombie character for inclusion in the Zombie project. This resulting character will be used in the following July07 Term as part of the 3D classes.
A portfolio of his work can be seen at his online portfolio. Most of the class will be done using Alias Sketchbook Pro, but the techniques apply to Photoshop and traditional media.

This set breaks down step-by-step the process for integrating live action footage with complex digital sets to create an imaginative world inspired by the music of singer Lolly Jane Blue.

Each disc explores a particular phase in the production's pipeline from concept to final compositing. Sil begins with a discussion of early explorations and the pre-production process, and he's followed by the students as they cover their particular responsibilities for the production. Sil and the students cover many technical subjects including motion tracking in Boujou, compositing, rotoscoping and keying in After Effects, previsualization, modeling in ZBrush, texturing in BodyPaint, digital sets, animation and effects in Maya.

This set hopes to inspire and educate anyone who dreams of creating their own live-action production that incorporates dynamic visual effects.

The spec map is the last part you will cover in Photoshop and this map will show you how to control all the highlights of the skin with more procision. Finally, we cover lighting to show off all your hard work and to get some nice renders.

This tutorial is meant for intermediate to advanced users who have an understanding of the Maya interface and tools. We will start off the car by setting up image planes of top, side, front and back views to aid us in seeing the correct shape of the car from all angles. Once the image planes are up we will start modeling using a variety of different modeling methods including nurbs curves, nurbs primatives as well as polygons to achieve the basic shape of the car.

Then we'll combine and edit the geometry to refine our shape and start adding details where lights are found for the contours of the body. Some of the tools we will be using are split polygon, cut face tools. as well as extrude face and edge tools. When the modeling of the car is complete we will begin setting it up for texturing. We'll cover the UV editor and how to lay flat UV's of your geometry using the tool set found in the editor. We will then take a snapshot of the UV's and import them into a paint program where you will learn how to add color using layers as well as the basic techniques of adding stripes of color to your car if you wanted to do so in the future.

Once we have color on our car we will dive into lights and material editing so that we can start getting a nice realistic look and feel. You will learn how to adjust settings on your paint color material to get different effects as well as how to adjust your lights in many different ways to enhance your color by adding highlights and reflections. The last part covers how to do your final renders..

CRAIG NELSON emphasizes logical order while drawing. He compares his drawing process to focusing a photograph. He builds layers of soft lines and swatches of tone then rapidly sharpens his subject with crisp edges and bold darks.
You see Craig Nelson translate angles from his source photo to his paper, as he looks for reference points to guide him. He completes a gentle outline of his subject then dusts in a layer of tone. With tissue and fingertips, Craig diffuses blocks of color to avoid locking in detail too early in the drawing. With his value in place, Craig finishes the drawing with dark charcoal lines and deliberate strokes. He carves out the well worn character of his subject’s face and lifts out highlights with a kneaded eraser. Throughout the workshop, Craig Nelson emphasizes restraint, “under doing” each step until he finds the right moment to bring his subject into focus. As he adds last details to the nose and chin, you’ll see this logical, intuitive process come to fruition.
Craig Nelson is the director of Fine Art, Drawing and Painting at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco. He has taught for over 30 years.
